As reported in a recent article in the Maui News, the island’s only domestic violence shelter, which provides a safe place for victims and their families, is experiencing serious funding issues. Women Helping Women needs $189,000 to keep the shelter in operation through the end of its fiscal year in June.
State funding has been cut by 41 percent this year and unfortunately coincides with an increase in the use of the shelter. The agency had to lay off three employees earlier this year and those remaining staff members are working shifts in order to keep the shelter open.
In response to the dire situation at the shelter, a local resident, feminist, activist and supporter of the shelter will be matching donations through the end of the year.
Stacey Moniz, executive director of Women Helping Women sent out a letter to supporters in November letting them know about the matching donation offer. In her letter, she stated, “This is an amazing offer and can help save our shelter. This is a time where your donation, great or small, will make a difference.”
She went on to say, “The timing couldn’t be more perfect. This is the roughest year.” But the offer to match donations has provided hope for a way out of the worst funding crisis the shelter has faced in fifteen years.
This very worthy cause needs your help and support to continue their work in assisting victims of domestic violence by keeping the shelter open.
Donations of bedding, pillows and clothing can be dropped off at the agency’s ReVive Resale Boutique at Kahului Shopping Center.
