I found there was only one company, Maui Kayaks that rents kayaks where you don’t have to go on a tour. They are located at 505 Front St.
The charge was $20.00 for 2 hours or $30.00 for the day. You start kayaking in front of I’O (Link: http://www.iomaui.com/), Pacific O’s (link: http://www.pacificomaui.com/) and The Feast of LeLe. (link: http://www.feastatlele.com/) If you are on vacation in Maui I would recommend both of these restaurants and if you are going to do a Luau I highly recommend the Feast of LeLe.
There is a big coral reef and you have to be very careful to follow the instructions so you don’t damage the reef. My kayak was only a few inches from the coral. It was like snorkeling!
As we were heading out we saw a Hawaiian Monk Seal and were told there are only 1,200 in the world. This one was sleeping peacefully and looked like he was living a great life.

I saw many turtles and one giant one that followed me. Wait. Maybe I was following him. I truly have never seen a Hawaiian turtle so big anywhere on the island or anywhere else for that matter!
Another first for me was seeing the Lahaina Town coast line from the water. All in all it was a beautiful day.
