In January, Gov. Neil Abercrombie released funds for the first phase of highway construction and improvements that will dramatically change the way people access and move in and around Kahului Airport.  The work on the first phase (from Puunene Avenue to Hana Highway) is expected to begin in late summer.

The governor released an additional $50 million last week for the second phase which will run from Hana Highway, about 770 feet on the Paia side of the Dairy Road intersection, to the new “Airport Loop Road.”  The new road will bring drivers straight into the terminal area instead of the current curving entrance off of Keolani Place.

The governor also released $160,000 for the development of plans and studies for a car rental facility at Kahului Airport.  The car rental facility will house all rental agencies in one structure with tentative plans to begin work in February 2014 and completion estimated near the end of 2015.

The car rental facility will be able to hold 1,500 to 2,000 rental cars and will provide airport employee parking on the roof of the facility, thus opening up public parking in front of the baggage claim area.  All customers of the car rental companies will be shuttled to and from the airport facility as is commonly done at most airports on the mainland.

Work is expected to begin on the Airport Loop Road late this summer or early fall and will take 12 to 16 months to complete.  Because of the need to transport materials and equipment to the car rental facility work site, the Airport Loop Road will not be fully completed until the car rental facility is finished.  The Airport Loop Road will run through the current cell phone lot and UPS facilities.  UPS is in the process now of  finding and relocating to another site.

Other Maui County airport related items include $3 million for restroom renovations with the addition of air conditioning to the restrooms and additional money to fulfill FAA requirements, evaluate pavement conditions, plan future projects and to determine which areas of the airport need repairs or reconstruction.
