A fire started May 3, 2010 at about 2:20pm.  Maui Police officers began going door to door shortly before 1:00a.m. May 4, 2010  in the Olowalu area to begin evacuation of an estimated 100 residents.  At 1:30 a.m. Honoapiilani Highway from Maalaea to Launiupoko Park was closed.  Motorists are advised to avoid unecessary travel through the area.  At 6:30a.m. this morning Honoapiilani Highway remains closed between Maalae and Launiupoko Park as fire crews continue to battle the fire.  Vehical traffic through Kahakuloa will be allowed for Wailuku-bound traffic only and motorists are advised that the road through Kahakuloa can be hazardous and very slow moving.  Maui police will allow local residents of Kahakuloa access to their homes via Waiehu.

Red Cross shelters remain available at the Red Cross shelters and the Lahaina Civic Center for those displaced.

Travelers in the West Maui area with departing flights out of the Kahului airport are advised to check with their airline carriers and plan accordingly.

An estimated 1,100 acres have been burned and helicopter support has resume this morning.  Due to shifting wind conditions, the fire advanced to Olowalu through the night and is now near the roadway of Honoapiilani Highway.
