6pm to 9pm – Wailuku First Friday is Wailuku Town’s (Central Maui) monthly street party.  The street closes to local traffic at 5:30pm for this free community event and the fun begins with live music, sidewalk artisans, crafters, food vendors.  You’ll enjoy live music at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park and some special music at Maui Thing stage and more!  Be sure to visit the local restaurants and get Wailuku Good Eats! Starry Night Cinema: Wreck-It RalphMaui Arts and Cultural Center – 6pm Gates Open for music, prizes, food vendors and art-making before the 7:30pm Starry Night Cinema:  Wreck it Ralph held at the Pavilion/Amphitheater.  Bring the kids, your blankets, mats or low backed beach chairs to enjoy an evening on the lawn with another great outdoor family-fun movie experience at the MACC with Disney’s “Wreck it Ralph”.  Admission is FREE!

Wednesday, September 11

6:30pm – 7:30pm – Makawao Public Library (Upcountry) – “Maui’s Native Forest Birds,” a free presentation by the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, will be conducted at Makawao Public Library on Wednesday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Adult Section.  Laura Berthold, ornithologist of the Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, will share information about the ecological history of Maui’s native forest birds. These unique animals adapted to an island environment very different from today and are continuing to persist while facing many challenges.

Berthold will present photos of the birds and the forest they inhabit. In addition, Berthold will discuss the project’s research and habitat restoration efforts. Learn how this project as well as other projects is helping to save Maui’s endemic flora and fauna.  The Makawao Public Library and Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project are sponsoring this one-hour program that is suitable for ages 5 and older.

Thursday, September 12

7:30pm – Lecture/Demo:  Unukupukupu at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Yokouchi Pavilion.Unukupukupu/ Dancing Beyond the Veil descends from the ‘Aiha‘a traditions of Hālau O Kekuhi, a hula tradition anchored in the rituals of Pele, deity of Hawai‘i Volcanoes.  This lecture demonstration will be conducted by Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō.  Join the lecture and demonstration this evening as Dr. Tangaro gently raises the veil of hula to reacquaint ourselves with the collective role that choreography, chant, ritual regalia and dreaming have in spiritual transformation, doing so through presentation, discussions and a workshop.  $13 plus applicable fees.  Call 808-243-4227 for additional information.

6pm – 9pm – The 2nd Friday in Lahaina –  Lahaina is especially suited for a Maui Friday Town Party because of its intimate Front Street setting, cultural and historic significance, and reputation for hosting fun for everyone in the family. 

7:30pm – Maui Arts and Cultural Center – Hula Master Class Workshop held at the McCoy Studio Theater. Kumu Hula Dr. Taupouri Tangarō’s Hula Workshop. Under the instruction of Dr. Tangarō, a workshop in the ‘Aiha’a dance and ho’opa’a traditions will be facilitated. The workshop is for advance hula practitioners: kumu hula, alaka‘i, advance ‘ōlapa and ho’opa’a. Saturday, September 14

9am – 5pm – The 7th Annual Pailolo Challenge – The Pailolo Challenge offers an incredible 26-mile down-wind canoe race from Flemings Beach, Maui to Molokai’s Kaunakakai Pier.

It has grown rapidly since it was reinitiated as a sanctioned race by Hawaiian Canoe Club in 2007 with 12 teams participating, largely due to the aloha shown to visiting teams. From 2010 to 2011 the Pailolo Challenge saw the number of entries grow by 43%. In 2012, crews represented five Hawaiian Islands, three states (HI, CA, OR) and four countries (U.S., Canada, Australia and China).

Canoe divisions include traditional Hawaiian class canoes as well as unlimited canoes. Teams can be composed of men, women, or a combination of men and women. Masters division includes 40, 50, and 60+. The iron division is open to men, women, and mixed teams. 

Awards party hosted on Molokai with ono food, live music, award presentation, and lots of fun. Each participant receives and t-shirt and gift bag. Hotel and travel specials available on Maui and Molokai.

1pm to 7:00pm – The 8th Annual International Hula Competition – Ku Mai Ka Hula held at the Castle Theater.  This event features hālau winners from Japan’s competition and hālau from Hawai‘i in adult solo and group performances. The dancers compete in kahiko (traditional hula) and ‘auana (modern-day hula stylings) in both male and female categories. This competition features prestigious judges and award-winning hālau, so no need to wait till next spring or travel to another island: come to the Castle Theater for a memorable and inspiring day of hula. Preshow performance starts 11:45 am. Food and beverages are available all afternoon.  $25 for an afternoon of performances! Half-price for keiki.

7:30pm – Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao-de Haas at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center McCoy Studio Theater.  A protégé of world-renowned maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, Shubhendra Rao is described as a “brilliant light for the tradition of the sitar.” In this “East Marries West” program, the celebrated husband-wife duo of sitar maestro Shubhendra Rao and cello virtuoso Saskia Rao-de Haas create music that combines the rich texture of classical Indian music with Western Classical Music, folk traditions from different parts of the world, and exciting rhythms that leave audiences and critics spellbound.  Tickets $22 plus applicable fees. 

Saturday, September 21

9am – 1pm or whenever it ends!  Hula Grill Kaanapali at Whalers Village in Lahaina hosts the 17th Annual Maui Youth Ukulele Players Contest.  The contest is open to Maui County residents grades K-12. There will be 4 age division for solo artists and a separate division for groups.  Bring the entire family and enjoy this fun and unique event!

10am – 2pm – Bring the family and visit the Schaefer International Gallery at Maui Arts & Cultural center! Get a chance to go through the new art installation together to uncover the hidden meaning, make an interpretive piece of art, construct a tiny fort, and share the experience of wonder. FREE to the public

7:30pm – The one and only Tony Bennett performs at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Castle Theater. A premier interpreter of popular song, Tony Bennett is an artist who engages his audience, heart and soul. He’s been in the business more than 60 years, but that doesn’t stop him from gaining new fans each year and adding more Grammy Awards: 16 so far, including the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Special surprise: daughter Antonia Bennett will join him for this concert!  Tickets are $55, $65, $85, $125, $150 (plus applicable fees).

7:30pm – John Pizzarelli in Hulaville Festiville at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Castle Theater. John Pizzarelli, son of the renowned guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, is one of the greatest of jazz guitarists today. In addition to being a fabulous musician and bandleader, Mr. Pizzarelli is gifted with incredibly spot on vocals that at once both dreamily croon and deliriously swing. He is credited with reinvigorating the Great American Songbook. Always a crafty entertainer, showman and good-humored raconteur, this show will be elegant and uptown.  Tickets are $35, $45, $55 (plus applicable fees).
