Did we say “ice skating on Maui”? Yes! The Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas is introducing a new island holiday tradition which is sure to become a favorite with all Maui’s winter guests!
In partnership with BH Skating International, the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resorts Villas unveiled its “hybrid ice rink,” which acts like a real ice-skating rink, but doesn’t have any ice and doesn’t use any refrigeration or electricity making it an environmentally sound alternative to real ice. The rink itself is made with a synthetic polymer and is finished with a natural glide lubricant to act as a feel for real ice. The hybrid ice rink does allow for skating with real ice skates and no energy is needed or used to operate the rink itself.
The resort is calling it “Skating by the Sea, a Kaanapali Holiday.” The 1,000-square-foot, cozy skating rink is located on the resort’s lawn and decked out with tinsel on the vinyl fence enclosures with three Christmas trees standing as sentries near the entrance to the rink. Maui is proud of its warm weather, turquoise waters and tropical breezes during the holiday season and now there’s ice skating too! But instead of down jackets and gloves, skaters are wearing shorts and t-shirts – who could imagine it?
The first hotel guest to try out the rink is from Chicago and said it was almost like the real thing. George Sikora grew up playing hockey and said, “It’s probably as close to a real experience as you can imagine.” He added, “It was really an incredible experience to be ice skating in 85-degree weather on the island of Maui.”
Robert Megargle, the hotel’s director of food and beverage is who came up with the idea to have the plastic hybrid rink on the resort’s lawn. The rink is made out of polymer, a plastic-like substance, with a sugar-based lubricant which gets absorbed into the polymer so it’s not sticky, and “It acts and feels like real ice,” under one’s skates, he said.
He said that the rink comfortably holds 15 people, who will be allowed to skate for 20 minutes for $15. The price includes skate rentals, but people should bring socks.
“Skating by the Sea” will be operating through January 1, 2013.
Hours: Monday through Friday: 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday: 1 to 9 p.m.
Cost: $15 for 20 minutes; includes ice skate rental with all-day passes available for $75
Children 6 years old and under not permitted.
