Wow, what a day to remember!  Our team, Wiki Wiki, completed the Maui Channel Swim in 5 hours and 10 minutes.  I was happy to have shared the day with a great group of participants with my team members and the boat Captain being very supportive of each other. We started our swim at 8: 00 AM and after about 90 minutes the waters became rough with 4-6 foot waves and remained so until about the last 30 minutes.  It was inspiring to meet people 80+ years old who swam the channel. My future plans?  I plan to swim the Maui Channel Swim race again next year.

Now for some highlights of the race:

The race drew 55 teams.  Race rules call for teams to use six swimmers, each taking on a 30-minute leg before maintaining the same order through 10-minute intervals until reaching the finish.

Australia’s Tattersalls team was victorious for the fourth consecutive year defeating the RCP Tiburon Milers team by 15 seconds.  Randy Kinores has captained the Tattersalls boat for all four wins in its current streak.

Portuguese man-of-war added a dangerous element to the already challenging conditions of the ocean channel.  Ten minutes into his first leg of the 9.6 mile relay race, Codie Grimsey of the Australia’s Tattersalls team was stung on his arms and within minutes after that the sea creature was hanging from his face.  It appeared the pain from the man-of-war not only packed a powerful punch, it also provided an extra push.  “It really got me angry and I swam a good race,” Grimsey stated.  “That small pain across the face definitely builds the adrenaline up.”

Grimsey held off a late push from the RCP Tiburon Milers, a U.S. team, on the sixth and final 30-minute leg.  He crossed the finish line first on a very crowded Kaanapali Beach to seal the Aussies’ fourth consecutive title with a finishing time of 3 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds – 15 seconds in front of the Americans.  So, the rivalry between the Australians and the Americans continues as each team looks forward to next year’s opportunity to win the Maui Channel Swim!
