Volunteering on Vacation: Haleakala National Park Volunteer Service Trip

Saturday, June 1, 2013 – 7:30am – 3:30pm and Saturday, June 15, 2013 – 7:30am – 3:30pm

This free activity, offered through Pacific Whale Foundation’s Volunteering on Vacation program, offers free transportation and admission to Haleakala National Park, on an adventure led by a certified naturalist and professionally trained guide! While visiting the park, you’ll help remove invasive plants or help with other projects to protect the park’s incredible eco-system.

In exchange for your efforts, you’ll receive a free tote bag from Pacific Whale Foundation. Warm clothes, long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Bring water and lunch for a picnic at the park.  Advance reservations are required. Please call (808) 249-8811 ext. 1. Coral Reef Information Station at Ulua Beach

The first day in June is Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 8:00am – 11:30am and is then open through the rest of the month on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 8 am to 11:30 am. For information, call Pacific Whale Foundation at (808) 249-8811 ext. 1. 

Visit Pacific Whale Foundation’s free Coral Reef Information Station at Ulua Beach in Wailea to learn the names of the fish that you see while snorkeling. Ulua Beach is perfect for beginning snorkelers and this information station is a great place to learn about the reef and how you can protect it as you explore it. Free use of fish i.d. cards and reference books; get free applications of reef safe sunscreen, too!

Volunteering on Vacation: Malama Honokowai

Saturday, June 1, June 8, June 15, June 22 and June 29 – 9:00am – 3:30pm  

Through Pacific Whale Foundation’s Volunteering on Vacation Program, volunteer with Malama Honokawai and visit the beautiful and hidden Honokawai Valley, an area closed to the public. Among Hawaiian archaeological sites, you’ll learn about Hawaiian history and culture as you help to remove invasive weed plants and possibly plant native species. The program runs from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Bring water, snacks, lunch, sunscreen and bug repellent and wear closed-toe shoes, pants and a t-shirt. Meet at 9:00 am in front of North Sugar Cane Train Station, Puukoli Road, Kaanapali. You’ll receive a free tote bag for your efforts. Volunteering on Vacation: Hoaloha ‘aina

Monday, June 3, June 10, June 17, 2013 – 7:00am – 9:30am

Through Volunteering on Vacation, a free program offered by Pacific Whale Foundation, join South Maui Volunteers and group leaders Bob and Lis Richardson to help maintain an ocean-side trail, restore sand dunes, pick up litter and remove invasive species. 7:30 to 9:30 am. Volunteering on Vacation: O’o Farm

Wednesday, June 5, June 12, June 19 and June 26 2013 – 8:45am – 11:30am

Join Pacific Whale Foundation’s Volunteering on Vacation Program to work on an exquisite organic farm in Kula. O’o Farm is a unique and divergent multi-faceted operation in the misting forest of Waipoli (Kula, Maui). Meet at O’o Farms at 8:45 am on Wednesday mornings in Kula. The project work lasts from 8:45 am until 11:30 am and will include assorted farm chores. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring a light jacket that you do not mind getting a little dirty, water, and sunscreen. Gloves and gardening tools are provided. Hawaiian Islands Land Trust Service Project

Friday, June 7, June 14, June 21 and June 28, 2013 – 7:45am – 12:00pm

With Hawaiian Islands Land Trust, you’ll visit the Waihee Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge, a remarkable coastal area that’s rich in Hawaiian history and bird watching, to remove invasive species and clear brush.  The program takes place every Friday from 8:00 am to noon and includes four hours of work.

Meet at 8:00 am at the Waihee Refuge, located off of Halewaiu Road. (To get there, travel north on Kahekili Highway (Route 340) and turn right onto Halewaiu Road in Waihee. The entrance to the refuge will be a dirt road on the left just before the stop sign for traffic coming in the opposite direction. After arriving at the entrance continue onto the dirt road and drive past two gates to gather by the green colored house. To use maps.google.com, search for “Waihee Refuge.”  Bring water and sunscreen, and wear closed-toe shoes, pants and hat (sun protection). Snacks and cold drinks will be provided.

Island Rhythms Sunset Cruise with Marty Dread

Friday, June 7, June 14, June 21 and June 28, 2013 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Nothing says “Maui fun” like dancing in the open air on the bow of a boat at sea at sunset! This fun-filled cruise is led by local island music and reggae star Marty Dread. His charisma and enthusiasm gets everyone dancing and having a great time. It’s perfect for all ages! The cruise includes an array of delicious hot and cold appetizers, plus Maui Brewing Co. beer, wine, Mai Tais and tropical well drinks (up to 3 per guest) as well as sodas, filtered water and juices.

Offered by Pacific Whale Foundation, it departs at 5:00 pm on Friday evenings from Ma’alaea Harbor. Price is $59.95 for adults and $39.95 for children. For reservations and information, please call (808) 249-8811 ext. 1.

Beach Clean-ups with Pacific Whale Foundation

Wednesday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 26, 2013 – 9:00am – 12:00pm

Join Pacific Whale Foundation’s Conservation Manager Lauren Campbell to help clean up one of Maui’s popular beach parks. This is a great opportunity to talk story about local, national and international conservation issues while helping to keep marine debris and trash out of the ocean.

All participants who volunteer for three hours or more will receive a free tote bag from Pacific Whale Foundation through our Volunteering on Vacation program. The clean-up takes place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 9 am until noon. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Wear a hat and sunscreen and bring water or a drink. Please sign up at advance at (808) 249-8811 ext. 1. Directions will be provided to the beach site when you sign up.

Stargazing Cruise

Friday, June 7, 2013 – 8:00pm – 10:00pm

Because Hawaii is the most remote island chain in the world, stargazing here is some of the finest you’ll find anywhere. Pacific Whale Foundation’s stargazing cruise introduces you to Maui’s enchanting sky in a most spectacular setting — on the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Lahaina. This Pacific Whale Foundation evening cruise is narrated by special guest Harriet Witt, an international award winning astronomy writer and speaker, known for her entertaining and informative commentary on the stars.  For reservations, please call (808) 249-8811 ext. 1.

Moonlight Tidepool Exploration

Tuesday, June 18, 2013 – 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Brittle stars, urchins, octopi, oh my! Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine educators invite the public to meet some of the fascinating creatures that roam Hawaii’s tidepools at night during our Moonlight Tidepool Explorations at a South Maui tidepool.

This discovery event is recommended for people ages 6 and over. Participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. Refreshments will be provided. $10 per adult and $5 per child.  Advance reservations required. For reservations, call (808) 249-8811 ext 1.

Full Moon Cruise

Monday, June 24, 2013 – 8:00pm – 10:00pm 

What could be more romantic and fun than cruising on the vast Pacific Ocean under a brilliant full moon and enjoying delicious appetizers and desserts plus Mai Tais?  This full moon adventure with Pacific Whale Foundation is narrated by special guest Harriet Witt, an international award winning astronomy writer and speaker, known for her entertaining and informative commentary on the stars and moon. She’ll share wisdom and insights about the night sky and all things lunar.
