Proposed Maui Real Property tax rate that the Budget and Finance Committee Recommended for 2013
On May 1, 2012, the Maui County Council Budget and Finance Committee voted to increase the timeshare property tax rate 50 cents from $15.00 to $15.50. While this is lower than the requested $1.15 increase proposed by Mayor Arakawa, this will mark the second year in a row where the largest tax increase on Maui has fallen on timeshare owners. The Budget and Finance Committee recommendations will be presented to the full Council on May 23 for a vote.
The impact of this tax increase if it does pass the full Maui County Council is that timeshare owners will see an additional 50 cent increase in property taxes for every $1000 of assessed value.
Advantage Vacation along with ARDA-ROC and ARDA strongly opposes any increase in property taxes in Maui and testified and lobbied against these proposed changes at the County Council hearings recently held on Maui.
As reported in earlier articles, Maui Mayor proposed a 7.7% increase to the timeshare tax rate on top of the 8% increase of last year which meant timeshare owners would see a 15% increase in their property tax rate over the past two years. The proposed increase would have brought the overall rate from the current $15.00 per thousand to $16.15 per thousand.
While the Mayor’s office insists the tax increase will be “revenue neutral”, this continues the practice of taxing timeshare owners at a significantly higher tax rate than any other type of landowner. And these proposed increases come without any rational explanation or justification from the Maui County Council.
While this reduced increase is lower than the originally requested $1.15 increase proposed by Mayor Arakawa, this will mark the second year in a row where the largest tax increase on Maui has fallen on timeshare owners.
