Saturday, September 7

6pm Gates Open for music, prizes, food vendors and art-making

7:30pm Starry Night Cinema:  Wreck it Ralph held at the Pavilion/Amphitheater.  Bring the kids, your blankets, mats or low backed beach chairs to enjoy an evening on the lawn with another great outdoor family-fun movie experience at the MACC with Disney’s “Wreck it Ralph”.  Admission is FREE!

Thursday, September 12

7:30pm – Lecture/Demo:  Unukupukupu at the Yokouchi Pavilion. 

Unukupukupu/ Dancing Beyond the Veil descends from the ‘Aiha‘a traditions of Hālau O Kekuhi, a hula tradition anchored in the rituals of Pele, deity of Hawai‘i Volcanoes.  This lecture demonstration will be conducted by Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō.  Join the lecture and demonstration this evening as Dr. Tangaro gently raises the veil of hula to reacquaint ourselves with the collective role that choreography, chant, ritual regalia and dreaming have in spiritual transformation, doing so through presentation, discussions and a workshop.  $13 plus applicable fees.  Call 808-243-4227 for additional information.

7:30pm – Hula Master Class Workshop held at the McCoy Studio Theater

Kumu Hula Dr. Taupouri Tangarō’s Hula Workshop. Under the instruction of Dr. Tangarō, a workshop in the ‘Aiha’a dance and ho’opa’a traditions will be facilitated. The workshop is for advance hula practitioners: kumu hula, alaka‘i, advance ‘ōlapa and ho’opa’a. Saturday, September 14

1pm to 7:00pm – 8th Annual International Hula Competition – Ku Mai Ka Hula held at the Castle Theater

This event features hālau winners from Japan’s competition and hālau from Hawai‘i in adult solo and group performances. The dancers compete in kahiko (traditional hula) and ‘auana (modern-day hula stylings) in both male and female categories. This competition features prestigious judges and award-winning hālau, so no need to wait till next spring or travel to another island: come to the Castle Theater for a memorable and inspiring day of hula. 7:30pm – Shubhendra Rao and Saskia Rao-de Haas at the McCoy Studio Theater

A protégé of world-renowned maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, Shubhendra Rao is described as a “brilliant light for the tradition of the sitar.” In this “East Marries West” program, the celebrated husband-wife duo of sitar maestro Shubhendra Rao and cello virtuoso Saskia Rao-de Haas create music that combines the rich texture of classical Indian music with Western Classical Music, folk traditions from different parts of the world, and exciting rhythms that leave audiences and critics spellbound.  Tickets $22 plus applicable fees.

7:30pm – The one and only Tony Bennett performs at the Castle Theater.

A premier interpreter of popular song, Tony Bennett is an artist who engages his audience, heart and soul. He’s been in the business more than 60 years, but that doesn’t stop him from gaining new fans each year and adding more Grammy Awards: 16 so far, including the Lifetime Achievement Award.  Special surprise: daughter Antonia Bennett will join him for this concert!  Tickets are $55, $65, $85, $125, $150 (plus applicable fees).

7:30pm – Leon Russell at the Castle Theater.

Leon Russell, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend and music icon, returns to Hawai’i for a three-island tour! He recently completed a tour with Sir Elton John, celebrating the debut of their Grammy-nominated album The Union.  Tickets are $40, $45, $55 (plus applicable fees).

7:30pm – John Pizzarelli in Hulaville Festiville at the Castle Theater.

John Pizzarelli, son of the renowned guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, is one of the greatest of jazz guitarists today. In addition to being a fabulous musician and bandleader, Mr. Pizzarelli is gifted with incredibly spot on vocals that at once both dreamily croon and deliriously swing. He is credited with reinvigorating the Great American Songbook. Always a crafty entertainer, showman and good-humored raconteur, this show will be elegant and uptown.  Tickets are $35, $45, $55 (plus applicable fees).
