There are two options on the South Shore near the Marriott Waiohai and two more luau’s a little further North in Lihue and Kapaa that include more than just a luau!
No visit to Kauai is complete without experiencing a Hawaiian luau and many visitors always include a luau as part of their annual Marriott Waiohai vacation!
Luau’s On the South Shore:
Aulii Luau at the Sheraton Kauai Resort, Poipu
Marriott Waiohai guests enjoy breathtaking views and authentic entertainment as they take a nostalgic journey into ancient times where Native Hawaiian Chiefs ruled this area and hosted exquisite gatherings for their royal guests.
As the sun sets on Poipu Beach, you are invited to treasure the truly mesmerizing setting of this crescent bay with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. ‘Aha’aina (dinner) begins and as you indulge in island cuisine. You will be entertained with Polynesian demonstrations such as how to husk a coconut, tie a pareo (sarong) and even dance the hula.
The evening continues with drinks, lavish culinary treats and old-fashioned voices singing mostly in Hawaiian. Please call (808) 634-1499 for additional information and reservations.
Guest comments: “I think the primary reason to go to a lu’au is to see the performers and these dancers were outstanding. I love seeing the different dances from the different regions of the Pacific.” Another guest of the luau commented, “The luau has ocean front view but the lawn is very small for the show.”
Grand Hyatt Kauai Luau, Poipu
The conch shell and haunting drums call to and welcome malihini and kama’aina alike to enjoy this festive occasion under the stars.
Marriott Waiohai guests are invited to indulge in traditional Hawaiian foods and join in the excitement of song and dance of old Hawaii on Sundays and Thursdays. Check-in begins at 5:15pm, followed by a lei greeting, Hawaiian music, photo opportunities and Hawaiian arts and crafts. Call the toll free number (808) 240-6456 for additional information and reservations.
Guest comments: “We have gone to this luau two times and has been really fun.” Another guest commented, “I thought the whole thing was awesome. Food was great and the show was surprising. The dancers were fabulous and inspiring.”
The following two luau’s are definitely recommended and worth checking out – not your ordinary luau’s for sure!
Luau’s On the North Shore:
Luau Kalamaku & Plantation Train Ride, Lihue
Just north of the Marriott Waiohai in Lihue is where you will find this truly once-in-a-lifetime experience that offers more than just a luau! This is the luau that could be what everyone in the family remembers when they return home!
Make plans to come early and explore the shops of Kilohana Plantation, enjoy the local arts and crafts demonstrations and learn about ancient Hawaiian crafts and games. There is an optional train ride that takes guests through the 105 acre historic plantation with views of historic plantation homes, fields of pineapple, papaya, banana, sugarcane and taro. As guests disembark from the train they are invited to feed the herd of wild pigs, goats and sheep, and view the cattle, horses, Clydesdales and donkeys – always a big hit with kids of all ages! The train departs at 5:30pm from the Depot and returns in plenty of time to experience the Imu ceremony.
The storytelling begins as the breathtaking production tells the inspiring story of one family’s incredible voyage from Tahiti to Kauai, told through vivid storytelling and dance in an enchanting setting with a lavish buffet of local delicacies.
The luau operates Tuesdays and Fridays with check-in beginning at 5:00pm. Please call 1-877-622-1780 for additional information and reservations.
Guest comments: “They are located at a plantation which provides tours and free rum tasting. The show is a story of a polynesian family making it to the hawaiian islands. the culmination is a great fire breathing and twirling show.” One guest said, “I recommend getting there at about 4:30 to 5:00 so you can experience the crafts, the rum tasting, and the grounds.” Another had this to say, ” The show: OMG, it’s like Las Vegas meets Hawaiian Cirque de Soleil. The story is moving, the music and fire play mesmerizing and the dancers absolutely gorgeous!”
Smith Family Garden Luau, Kapaa
It’s always a celebration of life on Kauai at Smith’s Tropical Paradise Garden Luau. Enjoy the local atmosphere as the Smith family guides you through a 30 acre botanical garden and luau grounds.
Gardens open at 5:00pm to tour the gardens. After the tour, learn about the Hawaiian cooking method called kalua as the pig is unearthed at the Imu Ceremony.
Guests are invited to taste a refreshing mai tai punch or another beverage from the open bar as you listen to the family of musicians perform Hawaiian and contemporary tunes. Then get ready for an all you can eat extravaganza at the luau buffet! Please call (808) 821-6895 for additional information and reservations.
Guest comments: “We can compare to other Luau’s we’ve been to in Oahu and Maui. I have to say that this is the most impressive one. Nice TRAM tour, beautiful property.” And the food? “I say it is hands down better than most buffets. Good Mahi, Terriayaki Beef, Kalua pork, Lomi Lomi and chicken adobo.” Another guest commented about their number of visits: “We’ve been here 5 times (with different family and friends through the years) and about to make it #6 next month. Absolutely come early, if you can, to take pictures, feed the animals, and take the tram. It’s family run and has grown so much through the years! The grounds are gorgeous!!”
If you’re planning your first (or your next visit) to Kauai and have not yet experienced a luau, we hope you find this information and guest comments helpful in deciding where you’ll enjoy an evening of true Hawaiian hospitality and entertainment!
