I received an alert from ARDA regarding the great work being done by the combined efforts of the Florida Office of the Attorney General, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) in protecting timeshare owners from fraudulent practices in the State of Florida.
These agencies have been working together to protect timeshare owners from fraudulent practices in the secondary timeshare resale market specifically. The timeshare industry has seen the passage of landmark timeshare resales legislation in large part due to the efforts of Attorney General Bondi and her staff. In the past six months, dozens of investigations and arrests have been made by DACS which were related to timeshare resales fraud and the DBPR has spearheaded educational efforts to inform consumers about their rights as timeshare owners. After meeting with representatives from each of those offices last week, Jason Gamel, ARDA State Affairs representative, stated he is “more convinced than ever that Florida is truly finding ways to help those who take their hard earned vacations there.”
Mr. Gamel went on to say he expects plenty of industry cooperation in the upcoming months to help identify fraudulent businesses (that have targeted timeshare owners as their victims) and to aid in the drafting of future legislation to put more tools in the hands of law enforcement to eradicate fraud in the industry.
Along the same lines, he expects increased educational efforts to come from the state and the industry that will put consumers in a better position to make good decisions about how they sell their timeshare interests. You can also visit www.arda-roc.org/resales for information related to timeshare resales and other consumer protection issues.
For now, if a consumer wishes to file a formal complaint against a person or company who they suspect may be involved in fraudulent activity, we encourage them to visit the Florida Attorney General’s website, the Florida DBPR website, and the Florida DACS website.
I applaud the efforts of ARDA and ARDA-ROC as they continue to work with these agencies and look forward to great things happening for the timeshare industry and consumers in 2012 and beyond. As a part of my commitment to timeshare owners everywhere and specifically Hawaii timeshare owners, I will continue to monitor timeshare legislation as it affects the Hawaii timeshare industry and Hawaii timeshares for sale and report on proposed laws, tax increases, etc. that affect all Hawaii timeshare owners.
